Illuminated Signage

OVERVIEW

Illuminated signage is any sign lit from within or behind so it stays visible after dark, and in the UAE it is essential for storefronts that trade into the evening. K.A.T SIGNS designs, builds and installs face-lit, halo-lit and backlit signs across Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman and Abu Dhabi, using IP65-rated LED components engineered for heat, dust and humidity, with municipality permits handled.

What is illuminated signage?

Illuminated signage is signage with integrated lighting, usually LED, that makes the brand glow rather than relying on external floodlights. Because UAE trading hours run late and evenings are when many customers are out, an illuminated sign keeps your business visible and premium after sunset. The lighting can shine through the face, glow around the edges, or wash the wall behind, and each style creates a different look.

  • Face-lit letters and boxes that glow through the front
  • Halo-lit letters that cast a soft backlight on the wall
  • Backlit panels and lightboxes for even illumination
  • Edge-lit acrylic for a crisp interior glow
  • Illuminated pylons, blades and fascia signs

Face-lit, halo-lit or backlit: which should you choose?

The right illumination depends on the effect you want and where the sign sits. Face-lit is the boldest and brightest, halo-lit is the most premium and understated, and backlit lightboxes give the most even, poster-like glow. The table compares them.

Face-litLight through the letter faceHigh-impact storefronts
Halo-litBacklight glows on the wallPremium, understated brands

Are illuminated signs built for the UAE climate?

Yes, when they are built correctly, and this is where specification matters most. We use IP65-rated LED modules and drivers so the electrics are sealed against dust and humidity, marine-grade aluminium channels that resist coastal corrosion, and UV-stabilised acrylic faces that stay bright without yellowing under the sun. Proper heat management and sealed housings keep the sign running reliably through UAE summers, avoiding the dead patches and water ingress that plague poorly made lightboxes.

IP65 is the difference. Cheap illuminated signs fail when dust and humidity reach unsealed drivers. We specify IP65 components throughout so your sign keeps glowing evenly for years.

Do illuminated signs need municipality approval?

Yes, illuminated exterior signage in the UAE needs municipality approval, and its brightness and placement are part of the review. The sign must be bilingual English and Arabic with the Arabic no smaller than the English, and roadside signs may need RTA or landlord sign-off. K.A.T SIGNS prepares the artwork, electrical drawings and bilingual layout and files the permit, so your lit sign is compliant as well as eye-catching.

How is illuminated signage installed?

Illuminated signs combine sign fitting with a proper electrical connection, so installation is planned around both.

  1. Survey to confirm mounting surface and power supply
  2. Design with illumination type and brightness specified
  3. Permit submission for exterior signs
  4. In-house fabrication with sealed IP65 wiring
  5. Installation, electrical connection and night-time light check

Where it works best

  • Brand visibility and customer-facing communication
  • New openings, refurbishments, campaigns, and events
  • Projects needing coordinated design, fabrication, printing, and permits

HOW WE WORK

FROM BRIEF TO INSTALLED

01

Survey & sightlines

We measure your facade, check approach angles and night visibility, and confirm what the landlord and municipality will allow.

02

Design on your facade

You see the sign rendered on a photo of your actual storefront, day and night — not a generic mockup.

03

In-house fabrication

CNC routing, acrylic forming, LED assembly and finishing under our roof, with QC photos before dispatch.

04

Permit & install

We submit the municipality permit, then install — after hours if you are trading — and hand over with warranty.

FAQ

Illuminated Signage — ANSWERED

What is the difference between face-lit and halo-lit signs?
Face-lit signs glow through the letter face for maximum impact, while halo-lit signs backlight the wall behind for a softer, premium look.
Will an illuminated sign survive the UAE summer?
Yes, when built with IP65-rated LEDs, sealed drivers and marine-grade aluminium, which is what K.A.T SIGNS specifies as standard.
Do illuminated signs use a lot of electricity?
No. Modern LED illumination is energy-efficient and long-lasting, using far less power than older neon or fluorescent lighting.
Do I need a permit for an illuminated shop sign?
Yes. Illuminated exterior signs need municipality approval and bilingual EN/AR layout. We prepare the drawings and file the permit for you.
Does K.A.T SIGNS provide Illuminated Signage across the UAE?
Yes. K.A.T SIGNS designs, produces and installs Illuminated Signage across Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman and Abu Dhabi from our in-house facility in Sharjah, with government and municipality permits handled end to end — send your details for a free, fast quote.
