What is a hoisting flag and how does it differ from other flags?

A hoisting flag is designed to be raised up a flagpole and flown from a fixed mast, rather than carried by hand or held on a short pole. The defining feature is the rigging edge: a reinforced header (often a canvas or webbing band) runs down the hoist side, fitted with a rope and toggle or metal eyelets so the flag clips to the halyard and runs up the pole. That rigging is what separates a hoisting flag from a hand flag or a fan flag — it is built to be attached to a pole system, exposed to the weather, and raised and lowered repeatedly. Because it flies unshaded outdoors all day, a hoisting flag is made from a tougher, weather-resistant flag fabric and finished with reinforced stitching so the fly edge does not fray in the wind.

When do you use hoisting flags in the UAE?

Use hoisting flags anywhere you have a permanent or semi-permanent flagpole and want a flag flying above a site. The classic cases are the UAE national flag and the individual emirate flags flown outside offices, hotels, malls and government buildings, corporate flags carrying a company logo on a pole at a headquarters or showroom, and event flags run up temporary poles at an exhibition entrance, a sports ground or a launch. During National Day and Flag Day, hoisting flags go up across the country in huge numbers, from single villa poles to long rows of poles lining a corniche or a corporate campus. Wherever the flag has to be seen from a distance and fly properly in the breeze, the pole-and-hoist system is the right choice.

What size and finish should a flagpole flag be?

Match the flag size to the pole height so it looks in proportion and flies well — a flag that is too small on a tall pole looks lost, and one too large strains the halyard and droops. As a rough guide, taller poles carry larger flags. On finish, single or double-sided both work: a single-sided hoisting flag shows a mirror image on the reverse and is lighter to fly, while a double-sided flag reads correctly from both faces but is heavier and needs more wind to open out. For most flagpoles, a single-sided flag in a good weather fabric is the standard, reliable choice.
